Comprehensive Eye Examination
Your visit to our office starts with eye tests and measurements performed by our professionally trained Optometric Assistants. Since your vision can be affected by systemic diseases and medications it’s important that we complete a health history and list of any current medications you may be taking. During your examination the doctor will be performing tests to assess your vision and overall ocular health. Upon completion of the exam, the doctor will go over the findings and make recommendations to improve your vision and ocular health.

“The eyes are the window to the body”. Consider this, a thorough eye examination can detect, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and several different types of neurological conditions. Please be sure and schedule an eye exam every 1 to 2 years or according to your doctor’s recommendations.

Pediatric Eye Care

Pediatric Eye Care

The increased exposure of our children's eyes to video games, cell phones and computers in this technological driven world has created new stresses on the eye. Our doctors examine your child's eyes to make sure their muscular and focusing abilities are working properly. Our children’s exams include color vision, depth perception and binocular vision testing to rule out childhood conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes).

Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an eye disease that may lead to blindness. Glaucoma damages the optic nerve which interferes with its ability to transmit accurate visual information to the brains vision center. One indicator of Glaucoma is increased eye pressure. One of the very first tests performed in our office is tonometry which means eye pressure. During the exam our doctors will also check for signs of glaucoma with a detailed examination of the optic nerve. Your doctor may determine more thorough testing or procedures are necessary which often can be performed in our office. If indicated, you may be referred to an opthamologist in the area specializing in Glaucoma.

Cataract
During your eye exam the doctor checks for cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eye. Some factors contributing to cataract formation are ultra violet light, aging, heredity and certain medications. If surgery is required, the crystalline lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens. Our office consults with several of the top cataract surgeons in Rochester and we can work with you in managing your postoperative care.

Low Vision
We have a selection of low vision aids available for those with a visual impairment due to such conditions as Macular Degeneration and Diabetic Retinopathy. Many of these devices can assist patients with daily visual tasks that become more difficult without them. Please ask your doctor for more information on the latest technology.

Myopia Management

Myopia is more commonly referred to as nearsightedness, or the inability to see objects clearly at a distance. Myopia is on the rise, in its frequency and its severity. The reason for its escalation has been linked to two factors, genetics and lifestyle. Children who spend significant amounts of time using handheld devices are particularly susceptible. Slowing the progression of myopia in children age 8-12 (at initiation of treatment) is the revolutionary 1 -day contact lens from CooperVision called MiSight.

Orthokeratology; also termed ortho-k, corneal reshaping, or corneal refractive therapy is also a service offered at Rochester Family Eye Clinic. It is a non-surgical, non-invasive, FDA approved procedure to correct nearsightedness (myopia) and mild astigmatism with a high oxygen permeable contact lens that is worn at night. As you sleep with the lens the cornea is reshaped. Then the lenses are removed when you wake to correct your vision throughout the day, without the need for glasses or contact lenses.

Research has shown that ortho-k can reduce the progression of nearsightedness in children. Ortho-k can be a great option for vision correction for children, and it is FDA approved for all ages. Talk to your doctor for more information, or to see if you or your child would be a candidate for ortho-k.
